November 27, 1978, Dan White walked into City Hall, and shot Harvey Milk, and Mayor Moscone dead. Dan White being a former city supervisor who had resigned his post in protest of the passage of the city's Gay Rights Law, but wanted to be reinstated. When his reappointment into office was denied, he sought revenge. He's attorney claimed that the defendant's eating habits had impaired his judgement, and therefore had little or no control over his actions. This defence would later be known as "The Twinkie Defence".
After 48 years Harvey Milk had served in the army as a petty officer on a submarine rescue ship in the Korean War (1950-53), honourably discharged in 1955 as a junior lieutenant. Which he stated later was due to the military getting rid of those they believed were homosexuals. He even dabbled in theatre, hired as stage director for O'Horgan's San Francisco production of Hair. He worked as a high school teacher, and then as an investor. After being fired he moved to San Francisco with his partner Scott Smith. Together opening a camera shop in Castro. Milk lived openly about his homosexuality , though still kept it hidden from his family.
It wasn't until 1973 that he stepped into the political arena, after being outraged by the Watergate scandal. Believing he could make a change through politics he decided to run for a spot on the Board of Supervisors, San Francisco's city council. With the gay community as his voting bas, he wished to create an alliance with other minorities within the city limits. After several attempts at winning a spot on the city's board of directer, he finally won in 1977, due to the power he had accumulated through his club, "The San Francisco Gay Democratic Club". Becoming the first openly gay elected to a high office in San Francisco’s political history.Through his position he achieved much for the city and won great popularity, not only for the changes he made for homosexuals living in San Francisco, but for other laws too. Winning national recognition for his work on defeating a Senate bill in California, that would have prevented teachers from instructing in public schools.
Harvey Milk helped open the door for gays and lesbians in the United States by campaigning civil rights for homosexuals. In his eyes, gay issues were simply a part of an overall human rights vision. During his short lived political career, Milk battled for a wide range of social changes such as education, public transportation, child care, and low- income housing. Since his murder in 1978, he has remained a strong symbol of activism.
"Burst down those closet doors once and for all, and stand up and start to fight." -Harvey Milk
Det er ikke rart han vant "best performance by an actor in a leading role" i Oscar utdelingen i år.
"I have tasted freedom. I will not give up that which I have tasted. I have a lot more to drink. For that reason, the political numbers game will be played. I know the rules of their game now and how to play it." -Harvey Milk
